A Sea Symphony

Ralph Vaughan Williams
Sunday 18th March at 3:30pm
Nantwich Civic Hall

Our next concert features two of the most popular pieces of music by the English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams.

Ever-present on Desert Island Discs and never far from the top of Classic FMs Hall of Fame (last year it was No 2) is The Lark Ascending. We're delighted that our soloist with be David Greed, Leader of the Orchestra of Opera North. David plays on an violin by the eighteenth century Italian maker Giovanni Battista Guadagnini called, appropriately enough, "Mr Guadagnini". Of his instrument David said, "I never used to get too excited about violins. But when I met Mr Guadagnini I suddenly realised what an incredible work of art a fine violin is. It is so beautiful to look at and the sound is utterly luxurious."

The second piece in the concert will be Vaughan Williams's first symphony, with the title A Sea Symphony. It is a masterpiece. Setting the words of four poems by Walt Whitman it is a fantastically evocative piece of writing, conjuring up images of the sea in all its moods.

For this concert the choir will be joined by a full professional orchestra, which is why we've had to move from our normal concert venue of St Mary's parish church into Nantwich Civic Hall.

Tickets for this concert are priced at £15
